THE WORKSHOP
Crop breeding for resistance to pests, diseases and abiotic stresses as drought and heat, is urged by the climate change and a rising food demand worldwide, in order to ensure an adequate food supply. However, crop varieties with high production capacity often need more inputs to produce more and better. Recent research shows a relationship between the use of agrochemicals and the loss of health, especially in developing countries, where the lack of knowledge of their effects contributes to their non-controlled use, and emerging risks in agriculture are innumerable. This workshop pretends to link food and health security through a multi and interdisciplinary approach, with experts from institutions involved in agricultural, educational and health research worldwide (Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, UK, USA, Mexico, Peru) to disseminate the latest scientific developments and experience on crop improvement, integrated pest management, monitoring agricultural risk management, and the impact of the use of chemicals on the environment, and their effects on human health, as the development of neoplastic diseases and decreased fertility. During the Workshop, simultaneous translation Spanish – English and vice versa will be available.

OBJECTIVES OF THE EVENT

Professional updating to meet the new challenges of agriculture due to climate change, with emphasis on two current problems that wreak havoc worldwide: the HLB and its threat of entry in Peru, and the wheat blast disease identified in Asia (Bangladesh) and disseminated in South-America today.

Sensitization and awareness about the risks and effects of unsafe and uncontrolled use of agrochemicals.

Setting up a multi and interdisciplinary network for the development of research projects addressing food and health security, and dissemination of research results worldwide.

TARGET AUDIENCES
Professionals with different backgrounds (agriculture, health sciences, education, social sciences) seeking an update of knowledge and approaches to meet the new challenges of global agriculture due to climate change to assure food and health security. The event also brings together all actors related to agricultural activity, aiming in exchanging experiences and exploring new options available to improve the crop supply chain and wellbeing of population, as well as rural livelihoods.

Matthew Bonner (The State University of New York): Environmental and occupational epidemiology, cancer epidemiology, pesticides, air pollution, radon, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phthalates.
Fernando Carvalho (University of Lisbon, Portugal): Protection and radiological monitoring of the environment. Organic pollutants (pesticides, hydrocarbons, PCBs), heavy metals, marine pollution, quality of drinking water, analytical quality control.
Carlos Guzman (CIMMYT, Mexico): Processing and nutritional quality of wheat germplasm.
Sally W. Mallari (Management Sciences for Health, Philippines): Analysis and strategy development in finance programs and projects dealing with food and health security.
Martin Parry (Lancaster University, United Kingdom): Physiological crop breeding, improvement of photosynthesis to increase yield and quality of crops in dry and hot environments.
Huub Stoetzer (Wageningen Agricultural University (retired), The Netherlands): Crop protection, integrated pest management, horticulture and food standards, participatory agricultural extension.
Raul Villanueva (Kentucky University, USA): Identification and management of pests through integrated crop management, with emphasis on mites.
